Nowhere is tradition more important and more relevant in the Coast Guard than aboard the medium endurance cutters that make up the Coast Guard's deepwater fleet. Coast Guard crews aboard these ships still rise in the morning to the sound of a boatswain's pipe, still "lay before the mast" and salute the American flag every time they cross the brow of their ship. SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Coast Guard aircrews rescued 59 people and delivered more than 100,000 rations of food and water to people throughout the Dominican Republic after Tropical Storm Noel killed 83 people in the Caribbean nation. Coast Guard aircrews from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico, and Air Station Miami flew numerous rescue and humanitarian sorties over the disaster stricken nation. A number of rural areas and villages in the country were covered with water, and Coast Guard aircrews plucked survivors from the flood waters in situations reminiscent of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. More than 300 people gathered at Blackthorn Memorial Park, on the north end of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg, Fla., Jan. 28, for a formal remembrance ceremony honoring 23 Coast Guard members who lost their lives when their cutter sank after colliding with a tanker Jan. 28, 1980. The Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn, a 180-foot buoy tender homeported in Galveston, Texas, was transiting from Tampa, Fla., when it collided with the tanker Capricorn just west of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Capricorn's anchor embedded into Blackthorn's port side and created a massive weight on the ship which caused it to capsize with 23 crewmembers still aboard. FULL TEXT

FISHERIES PROTECTION IS BALANCING ACT FOR TRAINING CENTER

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Since the invention of the hook, fish and fisherman have endured what can only be called a somewhat hostile relationship.

During the last few years, they've both found a very important friend in the Southeast Regional Fisheries Training Center (SRFTC), a United States Coast Guard school for fisheries boarding officers.

SRFTC (pronounced “surf tech”) addresses several main concerns; the safety of fishermen, preventing encroachment into the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by foreign fishermen, and ensuring compliance with domestic fisheries law. These missions were established in accordance with the Ocean Guardian fisheries enforcement plan. Established in 1994, SRFTC instructs boarding officers to professionally ensure these goals are met. MIAMI, Fl. - Hundreds of Coast Guard JROTC cadets stood proud in formation Wednesday morning, as the commander of the Seventh Coast Guard District inspected each cadet as part of this year’s Pass in Review, a 13-year tradition at the Maritime and Science Technology Academy.

Since its establishment in 1991, the MAST Academy in Miami is the only high school in the nation to provide the Coast Guard with a JROTC. Located near the busy Port of Miami, the school is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

AGENCIES KEEP MIGRANTS SAFE AT SEA, PROTECT U.S. BORDERS...Years ago, it was almost as common for law enforcement vessels patrolling the Mona Passage to intercept one another in infamous and frustrating “blue-on-blue” situations as it was to stop the yolas smuggling migrants into Puerto Rico. Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the reorganization under the Department of Homeland Security, things have changed—and for the better.

PSU 307 COLLECTS TOYS, CLOTHING FOR NEEDY CHILDREN...As part of “Operation Fill the Boat”, one of the unit’s 25-foot patrol boats was posted in the parking lot of local Wal-Mart stores. Crewmembers asked shoppers to toss a new toy or clothing item into the vessel. More than 3,600 toys and pieces of clothing, including several bicycles and portable radios, were collected during the drive.

COAST GUARD PULLS THREE GEORGIA FISHERMEN TO SAFETY IN HEAVY SEAS...Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, Ga., crewmembers rescued three Georgia fishermen 62 miles east of Sapelo Sound, Ga., 6:40 p.m. Feb. 16 after their 37-foot sport fishing vessel, Ray A One, homeported in Townsend, Ga., capsized sending all three men scrambling into a life raft.

VIRGINIA CUTTERS BUSTING UP CARIBBEAN SMUGGLERS...Four Portsmouth, Va., based Coast Guard cutters operating in the Caribbean seized more than 11,500 pounds of drugs and caused approximately 3,000 pounds more to be dumped at sea between Jan. 21 and Jan. 24.

Coast Guard aircraft, cutters, and small boat crews work to save more than 90 Dominican migrants off Puerto Rico’s north coast

Air crews from Air Station Borinquen pull 35 migrants from the breaking surf off the north coast of Puerto Rico in a dramatic rescue effort.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - As the crew of the patrolling Falcon jet from Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, looked down at the narrow vessel slowly making its way toward the Puerto Rican coast, the yola’s passengers waved cheerfully at the Coast Guardsmen tracking their voyage.

The overcrowded vessel teetered from side to side in the gray, forbidding seas as it clumsily approached the coast, its second attempt in reaching Puerto Rico the morning of Dec. 3. The now nervous passengers could see the rocky beaches, thinking they were minutes from setting foot on land.

Sadly, nine of them would never make it alive.

The nightmare began as wave after wave began crashing over the stern of the yola, washing migrants overboard and swamping the boat.

As I peeled myself from the couch that was now permanently shaped like my derriere, I loped into the kitchen to see what could possibly be so important as to interrupt my fictitious world of gun-slinging and car theft...

...As I hung up the mic to the radio, the Warrant Officer standing next to me, having heard the whole conversation, bolted out the door on his way to make preparations for the helicopter's arrival.
