Coast Guard reponds to disabled vessel 40 miles off the coast

BOSTON- The Coast Guard is responding to a disabled vessel 40 miles southeast of Nantucket Friday Feb. 5, 2010.

The crew of seven aboard the fishing vessel Diligence notified the Coast Guard at 3 a.m., that their engine was disabled.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England is diverting the Coast Guard Cutter Grand Isle to the Diligence. The Grand Isle will then tow the Diligence to Buzzards Bay where they will arrange to be picked up by commercial salvage.

There have been no reports of injuries at this time.

“They are 40 miles off the coast,” said John Harland, operations unit controller at Sector Southeastern New England. “Our goal is to get them to a safe place where a commercial salvage company can pick them up and arrange for repairs.”
