Coast Guard reservist Petty Officer 1st Class Bryan Mastrangelo, a Malverne, NY native, was named the First Coast Guard District's 2007 Reserve Enlisted Person of the Year during a ceremony April 9, 2008, at the Coast Guard Integrated Support Command in Boston.

Mastrangelo was unable to attend the ceremony, but the respect his fellow Coast Guardsmen have for him was still apparent.

"When you have someone that good and cares that much, it's hard to see them go," said Senior Chief Robert Milmoe, the officer in charge of Station Jones Beach. "You would've thought he was working 365 days a year for the Coast Guard."

As a volunteer with the Malverne Ambulance Corps in New York, Mastrangelo, a qualified paramedic, took an ambulance home overnight for emergency response within the community, sometimes being the first responder on scene.

"He was a great person to have on the crew," said Matthew Crimmins, the vice president of Malverne Ambulance Corps. "He was reliable, good under pressure and a very good EMT." The 27-year old Mastrangelo worked for the New York Harbor Police Department's Waterfront
