| Coast Guard airlifts injured sailor from cable ship |

BOSTON - The Coast Guard hoisted a crewman from a Barbados-flagged ship today 125 miles south of Nantucket, Mass., after he fell and badly injured his head. The master of the 350-foot long IT Intrepid, a cable ship bound for Portsmouth, N.H, after laying cable along the New Jersey coast line, called the Coast Guard for help at about 10 p.m., Monday. A rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod launched near midnight, arrived on scene 45 minutes later and deployed a rescue swimmer to the deck of the IT Intrepid to assess and prepare the man, a Polish citizen, for hoist. Safely airlifted, he was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I. at 3 a.m. "The receiving folks in Providence were excellent," said Coast Guard Lt. Brian Hopkins, aircraft commander. "When we approached the landing pad on the ground, local police and fire vehicles had the entire area cleared for us and the ambulance was right there waiting." He also praised the crew of the IT Intrepid who, prior to the helicopter's arrival, had bandaged and prepared the man for the airlift. "Everyone was really on the ball to help the whole mission run smoothly from start to finish." |
