Coast Guard launches new command center

BOSTON - The Coast Guard's First District will announce the official opening of a new center of operations during a ribbon cutting ceremony in Boston Monday. The command center, which oversees control of Coast Guard units along the nearly 2,000 miles of coastline from Maine to New Jersey, has undergone a three-year, $1.2 million renovation project. The upgrade, a collaboration between the Coast Guard and the U.S. General Services Administration, enhances the district's ability to execute search and rescue cases, homeland security operations, fishing vessel safety missions and other maritime safety and security objectives. The new facility, now nearly three times larger than before, also provides a working space for other local, state and federal responders in the event of a large-scale incident. The layout includes a host of "plug and play" technologies, linked monitors and a video conference room which all allow for streamlined information sharing and unified operations from different work stations. "This space is the heart of the entire district's operations," said Lt. Cmdr. Kendall Garran, the command center supervisor. "As a multi-mission agency faced with increasing demands and objectives, modernization was essential."
