Local Coast Guardsmen receives the Red Cross ‘Hero' award |
|
| Lt. Cmdr. Chris Kluckhuhn |
"I was surprised when I found out that I got nominated," said Kluckhuhn. "I just did what I had to do to get those two people out of the car as quick as I could. I never thought that I would be referred to as a hero."
Kluckhuhn, who is the innovations and process improvement officer at the First Coast Guard District in Boston, was on his way to work May 31, 2007 when he saw a vehicle in front of him lose control, hit an oak tree head on, and burst into flames.
Kluckhuhn pulled over and ran to the car, climbed through the back door, and with the help of another onlooker, carried the two unconscious victims to safety.
A passing ambulance stopped and took over first aid. Kluckhuhn returned to the burning car to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. He also assisted easing both victims onto stretchers for emergency medical team transport.
"This ceremony was a great way for the public to see the Coast Guard in action," said Capt. Dan Abel, commanding officer of Air Station Cape Cod. "It gives the Coast Guard recognition for the every day lifesaving activities that we do on and off duty."
