Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg to Hold Change of Command

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A change of command ceremony is scheduled for the Commander, Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mahaffey Theater, located at 400 1st St South, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Coast Guard Capt. Joseph A. Servidio, Sector St. Petersburg commanding officer, will relinquish command to Capt. Timothy M. Close during a time-honored military tradition that formally transfers command.
A military unit's change of command is a transfer of total responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another.
Close, a native of Macungie, Pa., graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 and holds master's degrees in both Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. He will assume the responsibilities and authorities of Captain of the Port, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection, and Federal On-Scene Coordinator. He will lead one of the busiest and most dynamic commands in the Coast Guard.
Servidio, who has been in command since July 2005, will be assigned to the Air Force Strategic Studies Group in Washington.
Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg personnel are responsible for all aspects of safety, security and stewardship of the marine environment along the west coast of Florida. They accomplish this with the help of local law enforcement and maritime industry stakeholders, whose support and assistance are a direct and critical part of the success of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg.
